SAKINA: CHILDREN´S VILLAGEFrederic Oumar Kanoute has launched an initiative to establish a particular Children´s Village, called SAKINA, e in Bamako (Mali). Sakina combines several services and facilities for the needs of orphans and destitute children. The project consists of a school, a kindergarten, a center for vocational training, a health center, a small building for administration and facilities for sport and leisure. All children housed there live in 10 houses with foster mothers, giving them a proper family environment. All common facilities are open to children from neighboring areas to help integrate them into society in which they live. The construction of the entire complex was made with local materials and human resources, while respecting the traditional system of building buildings used for residence around a square where people gather to discuss and deliberate all matters affecting them. As a facility, the project of building a farm (farming and ranching), which serves to the self-sufficiency of the inhabitants of Sakina is underway, selling surplus production to obtain a source of income with which to deal the maintenance costs of the whole complex.
Works began in early 2008. For its construction have been followed local customs, and are using human and material resources of the region and also giving the opportunity to create wealth to local commerce.
For the Boys Town we chose the name “Sakina”. This Arabic word means peace, tranquility, serenity, inner peace; while its root from the word residence. His choice was not capricious, but we hope that all these concepts and values accompanying these children throughout their lives and are the basic support so they can have the development that they deserve.
